“…from the moment on the carousel when we see Agatha (Saoirse Ronan) through the eyes of the love-struck Zero (Tony Revolori). These shallow-focus images come from a director more often associated with wide-angled lenses and considerable depth of field. The long lens blurs the carousel lights swirling in the background, creating an almost halo-like effect, as if stars are swirling around Agatha’s head. The shot faintly echoes the final-reel, brightly colored close-ups of Dr. David Bowman traveling in the “space vortex” from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).”
~Matt Zoller Seitz, The Grand Budapest Hotel
Loved working on this portrait of Agatha, the second in my film character series. It was fun trying something new in using a number of highly saturated colours and getting the balance of the values and vibrancy accurately portrayed. This is by far my favourite Wes Anderson film, and was the theme of my golden 29th birthday party.
